AlgomaTrad Camp 2019 is now open for Registration!

The 16^th Annual Algoma Traditional Music, Dance, and Heritage Arts Family Camp 2019 (AlgomaTrad 2019) is open for registration. AlgomaTrad 2019 features an exciting cast of great Canadian musicians and artists,click on their names to see a full bio, who will spend a whole week on St. Joseph Island instructing and performing, including:

Louis Schyer, one of the renowned Schryer Triplets and 8-time Canadian Open Fiddle Champ and 4-time Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Champ, will be back to share his mastery of the fiddle;

Sophie and Fiachra, a duo playing traditional music from Ireland and Québec. Sophie Lavoie is a Québecois fiddler and singer and Fiachra O’Regan, from Ireland, is an all-Ireland Champion of the uilleann (Irish) pipes and Irish style tenor banjo-playing . Together they take the traditional music of Québec and Ireland and mesh it in a unique way, remaining true to their roots while creating a new and original sound;

Four-time Canadian Stepdance Champion, multi-instrumentalist and astounding performer, Kyle Waymouth,  will be at AlgomaTrad for another round;

Cape Breton fiddle player Dan MacDonald is back this year. His first solo fiddle CD Urban/Rural was nominated for Instrumental Solo Artist of the Year, Canadian Folk Music Awards. He is currently touring Ireland with his group North Atlantic Drift;

Guitarist and singer Andy Hillhouse, an original member of Mad Pudding who has toured with Pierre Schryer and is currently Artistic Director of Harrison Festival for the Arts in British Columbia, is returning to AlgomaTrad to lead group singing workshops and master guitar classes;

fiddler, pianist and accordionist Emilyn Stam returns to AlgomaTrad this year. She performs regularly with The Lemon Bucket Orkestra, The Shoeless, Eh?!, Filippo Gambetta (IT), John David Williams, and Té (NL). She also is co-founder of Balfolk Toronto, a new movement of social folk dancing in Toronto which hosts weekly drop-in dance evenings with live music;

Piano accompanist, accordionist, and Irish flute player Daev Clysdale  returns from last year to share his knowledge, wonderful musicianship, and ability to play with just about anyone;

Bassist/guitarist Joseph Phillips (Pierre Schryer Band, London Symphony Orchestra, Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project) is returning this year bringing his incredible musicianship and great teaching ability;

Multi-instrumentalist and arranger James Stephens, a core founding staff member of the AlgomaTrad organization is returning;

Martha Cooper, a second generation dance caller who has called all over Canada and is great with beginner and experienced dancers alike.

If Martha is not calling a dance, or dancing, she greatly enjoys playing for the dances on clawhammer banjo or Irish flute;

banjo player and multi-instrumentalist, Sam Allison, who performs as Lotus Wight, will be joining the team this year. Sam is no stranger to AlgomaTrad, having taught here in the past and performed both as a solo artist and with the group Sheesham, Lotus and ‘Son;

Elder Marly Day is a “Traditional Ojibway Grandmother”(Nookimis). With this title she is responsible to carry out the roles and responsibilities of a Grandmother. Throughout the years she has also also earned the right to carry a Traditional Sacred Bundle as a helper to Women or in Group work. For 17 years, Marly was the lead in a Women’s Hand Drum Group ( Wabshke Niimki Kweok) and she performed as Thunderbird Woman in the Thinking Rock Community Arts production “The Rivers Speak”;

singer/songwriter Reenie Perkovic and multi-instrumentalist Lea Kirstein, the wonderful duo that perform as Citizen Jane and who’s workshops and performances are always extraordinary.

Blacksmith Denis Frechette, master accordionist and hammered dulcimer wizard Steve Schneider, whistle player extraordinaire Eli Howard, multi-instrumentalist and guitar luthier Zachary Lefebvre, fiddle and banjo player Benoit Lefebvre, artist Miranda Bouchard of Thinking Rock Community Arts, and members of Jumblies Theatre will fill out the program.
