Welcome to the AlgomaTrad Senior Artists Online Series Registration page. The basic details about each concert, presentation, or workshop can be found below. In each item you will also find a link to more info about the presentation as well as a link to a Registration Form; you must register for any and every program in which you are interested. Hands-on workshops are limited, so register soon! All Series presentations will occur on Zoom.

Once you are registered you will receive an email confirming your registration. For those workshops where kits will be supplied, an email will be sent to those registrants about how to obtain the kits. Registrants will receive a Zoom link to the workshop, mini-concert, or artist presentation closer to the date of transmission. We will also reach out to those who have asked for help on their registration form on setting up a Zoom account and we will provide coaching for those who need it.

The AlgomaTrad Senior Artists Online Series is a free program funded by the Government of Ontario.

These presentations will bring you into the studios of these wonderful artists to see how they work and what has inspired them. Questions will be encouraged!

Weaving

Sarah Buckley will be presenting a « A Weaver’s Life » on Tuesday, March 03, 10:30-11:30am from her studio. She will talk about her life in weaving, offer some demonstration of her art, and answer any questions. A follow-up session will follow on Tuesday, March 10, 10:30-11:30am where she will be joined by experienced weavers Monica Murphy and Russ Mason to talk about a variety of topics about weaving and their perspectives on life as a weaver.

Visual arts

Conrad Bobiwash is considered one of the most innovative Contemporary Indigenous Artists in North America. Bobiwash’s water media works and a variety of compositions are developed with acrylics and specialized papers. Most recently he has gathered all the mythology and petroglyphs of the Algoma region and from his travels to start to draw and paint imagery that engages the memories of the Great Lakes Anishinabek. They denote that all things are animate with life and personify the sacred power in everyone and everything.

Conrad will be offering a talk and demonstration of his art and life’s work on Tuesday, March 8, at 1:30-2:30pm.

Woodworking

Errol Caldwell creates artistic and functional woodturnings and wood products. He is a licensee with Ontario Wood and is also a photographer. More about his work and methods can be found at theturningpoint.ca. Errol will be presenting an online demonstration and talk about his work and his life as an artist on Thursday, February 17 at 1:30-2:30PM.

Music, music, music!

Join with an online community to listen to some great local music. These artists are appearing several times on Zoom during the course of the Series…you can attend one, some, or all!!!

Schryer Country

Schryer Country is a an old-time country music group from Sault Ste. Marie and the North Shore who have been performing their brand of music up and down the Line for years and have a devoted following. Brothers Henry (guitar and vocals) and Ed Schryer (guitar, mandolin, vocals), are joined by their nephew Ron Schryer (fiddle) and their good friend Bill Pateman (bass, guitar, vocals) to produce a sound that is something old and something new, something borrowed and something blue!

Join Schryer Country for 4 evenings of music, 40 minutes each evening – Thursdays at 7pm, February 10, 17, 24, and March 3.

Les Anges de la Campagne

Les Anges de la Campagne is a musical trio from Blind River whose repertoire consists mainly of Traditional French Canadian folk music. Their music includes various genres such as « des chansons à répondre”, Acadian music, and songs from French artists such as Edith Piaf, Nana Mouskouri, Mireille Mathieu and others.

« Les Anges de la campagne » est un trio musical de Blind River. Leur répertoire se compose principalement de musique folklorique traditionnelle canadienne française. Leur musique comprend divers genres tels que des chansons à répondre, de la musique acadienne ainsi que des chansons d’artistes françaises telles que Edith Piaf, Nana Mouskouri et Mireille Mathieu entre autres.

Les Anges de la Campagne will lead interactive, online 50-minute concerts, Tuesday, February 1, 1:30pm, Wednesday, February 16, 1:30pm, Tuesday, March 01, 1;30pm, and Tuesday, March 15, 1:30pm.

Quilting

Patty Hoogendoorn will be leading an online workshop for EASY MITERED CORNER PLACEMAT & COORDINATING NAPKIN, on Thursday, February 10, 1:30-2:30pm. A follow up session to answer questions and share participants work will occur on Zoom again on Thursday, February 24, 1:30-2;30pm . Kits will be provided that will include all required fabric, batting and the pattern by Karen Montgomery. An on-line tutorial will provide pattern explanation and project guidance.

Registration is limited to 30 seniors who are residents of the North Shore from Blind River to Garden River.

Basketmaking

Terryl Ryan will be leading an online basketmaking workshop on Saturday, February 26. The workshop will be from 10am-4pm, with a break from noon-2pm .

Kits will be provided to participants, and registration is limited to 15 seniors who are residents of the North Shore from Blind River to Garden River.

Wool felting

Mireille Gagnon-Moes will be offering an online workshop in wool felting, guiding participants in a felted flower making project on Saturday, March 12, from 10am-3pm with an hour break for lunch from 12-1pm.

Kits will be provided to participants, and registration is limited to 15 seniors who are residents of the North Shore from Blind River to Garden River.

Special presentation!

Robbie Burns online celebration, Saturday, January 29, 7-8pm – An informal evening online that’ll include the address to the haggis, bagpipes, Burns songs, musical interludes from AlgomaTrad learners, and more. Sorry, we can’t serve supper over Zoom, but join us with the libation of your choice! This is the kickoff event for the entire series, so c’mon, get on your Zoom suit and find out what it’s all about!

UPDATE – Robbie Burns evening was a blast! It was a fun community evening that included the address to the haggis, bagpipes, Highland dancing from the Houvener family from Alaska and St. Joseph Island’s Auroro Hodgson broadcasting from New Brunswick, fiddle tunes from Aurora and Samuel Lemieux, fiddle and piano with Cara and Brenna Hall from Hamilton and from Marigje and Paul Cooper from the Island, Robbie Burns songs from Duncan Cameron and Paula Truskoski from Sudbury, more whistle, pipes, and piano from Pat and Julie, and a special guest feature from Toronto, Aine Schryer-O’Gorman, giving us a beautiful fiddle solo of Scottish tunes. Around 70 people attended the online presentation, mostly from the Algoma Region, but also from as far away as Dunedin, Florida!
