Tracy Marie Stevens is from St. Joseph Island, Algoma.  She works in a variety of mixed media with an affinity for natural materials, plants and blooms.  Tracy has been working with sweetgrass and birchbark for several years to create one of kind baskets and vessels inspired by the Anishinaabe and Metis arts. Materials are harvested with respect, gathering sweetgrass grown around the pond near her home. Following a passion for fine arts and education Tracy completed an Honours Degree in Fine Art from Algoma University (2002) with a concentration in Indigenous studies, as a prerequisite to a Bachelor degree in Education (2003).  She was awarded the President’s Purchase Award (2002) at Algoma University College’s student art show for a “Lands within Me” a mixed media piece expressing Indigenous cultural connections. Tracy is a trained Artist Educator with Learning thru the Arts (2012) certification, has facilitated private workshops, and has mentored students enrolled in Indigenous education programs in the district. Tracy was guest artist at Wabi Sabi craft show 2016 featuring a collection of birchbark baskets and sweetgrass pieces.  Currently, a Teacher of Technological Education and Indigenous studies, Tracy creates baskets and other mixed media art expressing a passion for sharing artmaking with others.
