It has been a busy spring and it’s great to report that all our events were well attended, some receiving some good media attention as well.

AlgomaTrad offered a five week toddler/parent singing/dance/movement program on St. Joseph Island in Feb/March, led by Julie, which was well attended and fueled families with a whole new repertoire of fun songs, singing games and dances to share at home.  Response was positive, so there will be more of this programming being offered this coming fall/winter.

What a fun dance we had the pleasure of hosting in March at the Moose Hall, with Caller Jean-François Berthiaume, in town to do some school workshops, with special guests Paul and Melika Lemelin providing some of the tunes with Julie, Pat, and Áine.  Among the 100 or so participants, we had some enthusiastic dancers  from Algoma University’s Foreign Student program…that’s them in the photo with some of our local supporters. We’ll try and post some video on the AlgomaTrad YouTube channel and let you know.

Our 5th Annual AlgomaTrad Trivia FUNdraiser was a smashing success, with 13 teams competing for the big prize…well, there is no big prize, but it was a fun night and we raised over $2000 after expenses. Gratitude goes out to all who supported  this event through registrations, donations, positive outlooks and humour, even when there were discrepancies with a few questions. Team Dominators came out of a close contest as the victors for the 3rd year in a row, and much thanks goes to our Quizmaster Gina Marie Wilson and to our organizing committee for putting the event together. We also would like to thank the musicians who provided excellent music throughout the evening – Abbie and Grace Wildman, Eric and Hannah-Lee Lawrence, Rod Martin, Samantha Giguere, Pierre Lefebvre, Shelene Hill, Tia Park, and Áine Schryer-O’Gorman.

AlgomaTrad’s Bluebird Nest Box building workshop, co-presented with The Kensington Conservancy and Johnson Township Recreation and with the building expertise of volunteer Mike Jones, occurred on a most beautiful April 22nd Earth day. There was a great turnout and Carter Dorscht of the Conservancy was on hand to provide information about Bluebirds and lend a helping hand. The event was covered by both the North Channel Current (click here to see the article) and the the Sault Star (click here to see the article). Plans are in the works to partner with the Conservancy in the fall to construct Birdfeeders for the winter.

The AlgomaTrad Youth Fiddlers (Abbie, Tia, Shelene, and Áine) were busy this spring, not only performing at Trivia night, but playing a few tunes at the Best Start Hub’s St. Paddy’s Day event with Sarah Boniferro’s Wee Stepdancers and also traveling to Pathways in the Sault to perform for an appreciative audience there.
