An exciting opportunity for those wanting to learn the Basics of Timber Framing before next year’s BIG BUILD

Have you ever wanted to learn how a barn or timber frame house was built for hundreds of years? In this 6-day introduction to Timber Framing course, with experienced Timber Framer Rob Geoghegan-Morphet, participants will expand and build on their carpentry skills by completing the joinery layout, cutting, fitting and raising of a small timber frame building using traditional hand tools as well as specialty power tools.

This 10 foot x 14 foot building will include traditional mortise and tenon and lap joinery that will be used to construct a frame out of rough sawn locally sourced white pine timbers.
Participants will work collaboratively to:
– Interpret design and joinery plans
– Use square rule layout for all timber joinery including mortise and tenons, lap joints and roof rafters
– Cut mortise and tenon joinery
– Rafter cutting and joinery connection techniques
– Testing and fitting of all joinery and timbers

This workshop will be held concurrently with the AlgomaTrad Family Camp at the AlgomaTrad Centre from 9am to 5pm. Registrants should supply there own lunch. Cost for the 6-day workshop is $600+HST. Registration is limited to 8 participants who must be 18 years old and up. Register Now!

“After completing my apprenticeship and achieving a Red Seal journeyman Carpenter status in 2008, it was time to expand my carpentry skills and return to my childhood where I travelled to many farms and was inspired by the joinery and techniques of timber framing. I attended a work shop and spent time working in a timber frame shop and I knew that timber framing was my path. I started Black River Timber Framing soon after and attended my first Timber Framers of North America community-build in Lexington Virginia as part of a 100-person crew to complete a project in 4 days. Since then I have travelled North America from Vermont to Vancouver Island and participated as a volunteer, instructor and project manager for 26 community projects as well as completing timber frames and log homes closer to home.

If I don’t have a chainsaw or chisel in my hand then you’ll find me teaching carpentry and renovations at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario or you’ll find me on the water paddling or fishing in the wilderness with my family.”
